Abstract
Background: To examine the association between diabetes mellitus (DM) and sarcopenia among Korean adults.

Methods: Data of DM associated with sarcopenia information was extracted from the 2008 to 2010 Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Surveys among subjects aged 50 years or older (n=5,867). The prevalence of sarcopenia was main outcome. Key independent variable was DM. We performed multivariate logistic regressions of the prevalence of sarcopenia after adjusting for age, current smoking, exercise, hypertension, chronic kidney disease, 25-hydroxyvitamin D, and total cholesterol levels. Final regression models were stratified by gender and age categories.

Results: Study subjects were aged mean 63.7¡¾5.8 years old and 47.2% were men. The prevalence of DM was 18.2% in men and 15.8% in women. The prevalence of sarcopenia was higher in subjects with DM compared with subjects with non-DM in men (20.8% vs. 12.2%) and women (21.7% vs. 15.2%). The prevalence of sarcopenia increased monitonically in older subjects of men and women. The disparity of prevalence of sarcopenia between DM and non-DM subjects widened in older subjects. As compared with non-DM subjects, DM subjects were over 60% more likely to have sarcopenia in men and 37% more likely in women.

Conclusion: DM is associated with an increased risk of sarcopenia in Korean adults. The risk of sarcopenia in people with DM increases with advance in age.
